If I couldn't find a document I used to key in the details such as ABCD Start and Finish" and a series of options used to come up that I could try. All of a sudden the "Ask me anything" has gone dead. What can I do to resurrect it?

Have you checked your settings? Type Cortana into the search field and click on "Cortana & Search Settings".

I have no idea what you mean by, "Search field". sorry to be so thick but I did this.

Below is where I used to key my question in and which no longer replys.

I opened “Frequent folders and keyed in, “Frequent settings” into “Search quick access” into the box in the right hand corner and 1,304 items came up

The top five are as shown below.

The device or whatever one should call it is still there at the bottom left corner of the Desktop but when I type a question into where, "Ask me anything" nothing happens.

I see a microphone in your attachment, can you use the speech feature to ask her a search question?
Try a right click on search (Ask me anything) bar depicted, click on settings, the task bar settings should open. In the top left you'll see a search box "Find a setting" type in "Cortana" and the user settings should appear for Cortana customizing or turning it off. I don't use Cortana, have no use for it. I use my search for windows only; apps, file and settings.

Try this; right click a blank are of your taskbar, move cursor to cortana, untick check mark to show search box. Then click the start button, the click start button again to close it. Right click blank area of taskbar again and move mouse cusor to cortana and re tick to show search box. Then try and use the search box to see it works.

Thanks for the advice. I am lacking in confidence and terrified that I will lose everything so I will wait until my computer tutor can visit and take me through the system reset because I have at least one other thing that's disappeared, the curved arrow on the left hand top corner that I used to be able to use to reverse an action taken using Word..

The lady that visits me when I have messed up my computer resolved the problem but regrettably her fingers moved faster than I can remember what she keyed in. Suffice to say she asked me if I had ever used, "Restart" to which I replied, "yes". She then clicked onto something which opened a series of boxes some with ticks and others without. I was not fast enough to note what triggered that and to embarrassed to expose my ignorance by asking. I also did not want to muck the computer up again but that's it.
