Why did Microsoft create so many builds? It confuses people.
For Mac OS X, the build is clear cut,
such as 10.12.6 etc.

There's more than 2 editions of Win10, I am running the RTM Version on several computers [Desktops, Notebooks and Tablets] and the Insider Preview Version on 2 Desktop. The Insider Preview/IP is a test or BETA version, got mine back in 2015 after signing up for the Technical Preview which was renamed to Insider Preview. There's also an RTM Enterprise version and Education version. Another IP version is called Skip Ahead. The build numbers are unique to each Version such as 14xxx, 15xxx, 16xxx, etc. A Build can be equated to the older Service Pack for Win7 and earlier.

By the way, I also have a MacBook Pro with macOS 10.12.6 Sierra [renamed from earlier Mac OS X] and a Desktop and Notebook with Linux Mint 18.
