Hello my Windows Insiders!

I’m at the Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) this week to meet partners and customers to understand the needs of their businesses and brands. Yesterday I gave a talk about what I have learned about my first 41 days about being the Insider lead and what I envision for the future of the program. Nothing should be a surprise for you, my Insiders. We are all about education and empowerment to transform every industry with our tech skills in the next decade. The audience had quite a few questions about how to engage their own customers in different industries (autos, medical, construction) and I learned quite a bit about how these industries differ from tech. It got me thinking about how to help these leaders build fans-as-part-of-product programs like ours. You can find the audio and slides from the talk here.

In build news, today we are releasing Build 14388 for both PC and Mobile to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring. This build has 44 new fixes in it including a bunch of fixes to improvement reliability and battery life and improvements to accessibility. A few of the most notable fixes are listed below.

Improvements and fixes for PC
  • We have updated the Store to version 11606.1001.39 with bug fixes.
  • We fixed an issue where Narrator keyboard shortcuts would not work after locking your PC and then logging back in and going to your desktop.
  • We fixed an issue where Narrator would not read the date and time under Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  • We fixed a TPM driver crash that could result in the device bug-checking (bluescreen) and rebooting.
Improvements and fixes for Mobile
  • We have updated the Store to version 11606.1001.39 with bug fixes.
  • We fixed the issue causing the keyboard to not show up consistently for InPrivate mode on Microsoft Edge.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in an app getting into a state after being suspended where it would be unable to launch until rebooting the device.
Known issues for PC
  • A recent fix went into place for the Hyper-V firmware that will that affect the ability to boot Windows Server 2016 Tech Preview 5 VMs with Secure Boot enabled. A fix for TP5 builds has been developed however, due to release schedules, the Insider Preview build changes will be released before the TP5 fix is released. During that time, if you try to boot a new TP5 VM with Secure Boot enabled, it will fail. The workaround is to disable Secure Boot during this period.
  • After you install this build on a PC using a non-EN-US language, you may get error code 0x80004005 when enabling Developer Mode on the “For Developers” Settings Page. Even after seeing this error message, your machine is in developer mode and you should still be able to use Visual Studio to develop Universal Windows Applications. In most cases, this error indicates that extra components required by the operating system to enable additional debugging features in Visual Studio or the Windows Device Portal could not be installed automatically.
To fix this:

#1. Go to Settings > System.
#2. Click on “Apps & features”
#3. Choose “Manage Optional features”
#4. Press the button “Add a feature”
#5. Select the package for Windows Developer Mode
#6. Click “Install”
#7. Reboot your PC
#8. Launch Command Prompt as Administrator
#9. Run: sc config debugregsvc start=auto

Finally, return to the “For Developers” Settings page. You will still see the error code, 0x80004005 but you should now be able to enable Windows Device Portal and the Device Discovery features.

Known issues for Mobile
  • Voice Recorder does not show up consistently as an option for Call Recording. We heard your feedback and plan to release a Voice Recorder app update via the Store soon that has the fix for this issue.
  • Wallet users are prompted for a PIN twice when using tap to pay from a locked phone. You can enter their PIN twice and tap as usual once the phone is unlocked.
  • REMINDER: We have changed the backup format for Windows 10 Mobile devices to reduce the size of the backup stored in OneDrive. As a result, if you do a backup on a device running the latest Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds and move back to the released version of Windows 10 Mobile (Build 10586) and restore from your backup – your Start screen layout won’t restore and remain the default Start layout. Your previous backup also gets overwritten. If you need to go back to Build 10586 temporarily, once you are on Build 10586 you should disable backup so it doesn’t overwrite the good backup from Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds.
We’re getting down to the wire, my Insiders. Thank you for your dedication this past weekend and every day.

As Dona notes in the blog post, we're getting down to the wire. The Anniversary Update is slated to arrive on August 2; however, Insiders should be expecting an RTM build much sooner than that. It could come as early as later this week or next week.

Phone upgrade went fine.
Physical machine upgrade went fine.
VM upgrade broke the photos app. Overall I guess the averages are improving but Microsoft needs to come up with a way to address some of these small issues with the upgrade.
I beat up on it with powershell and tried a couple other things but couldn't get it to work. So I wiped and did a clean install and of course everything was just fine.
Seems like we may be regressing back to Windows 95 days, when "Format C" was the go to repair tool.

The problem I had was a tweak I had and forgot to turn it off. After the RTM, I will have about 3 Metro Apps, no One Drive and many privacy changes done.

Don't get me wrong.....
I never actually use them, not a single one.
IF they all disappeared or stopped working tomorrow, I wouldn't miss them.
Personally, IF my only choice of mail client was the "Mail" app.... I'd go back to pencil, paper and a 47 cent USPS stamp for mail.
I just run through them all (everyone) once after an update to see what works and what got broken.
It's my penance for being such a lousy beta tester.

The weather app is actually kind of good. There are ways to remove all of them but I have no idea of what MS would do about it. I will remove all of the ones I can by using the uninstall app that is in the settings but I will not remove any using Powershell. At least not right away.:)

I don't use any of those 'modern apps' except Twitter.

I would not dream of using any MS mail app except the real Outlook and even then I'd want an Exchange server for it to talk to.
I use Thunderbird. Works on Windows, Mac and Linux. All the data is store in one directory tree which can be copied onto another machine. Does Pop and Imap. Has a built in Calendar. Free. What more could one ask for.

Talking of Exchange server...I wish MS would come out with a new version of Home Server. As a software kit, containing maybe 5 licences and a baby version of Exchange and maybe even SqlServer. I would buy it but I wouldn't buy it if I had to buy it on specific hardware.

I could build myself a Linux box but I'd rather have Windows server.

So.... one vote for the "Weather" App and one for "Twitter".
IDK.... maybe it's just me, but I keep my Twitter feed open in a browser tab and if I was more concerned about the weather, above looking out my window, I'd probably do the same with the Weather Channel or one of my local TV or radio stations which provide pretty much all I want to know about the weather.
Which brings me to "Edge".
IF that was my only choice of browser, I'd be digging through my attic in old junk boxes for an old version of Netscape or one of those CDs that AOL used to fill my mailbox with.
AND don't even get me started on Mail, People, Calendar.
That's me on my desktop and my laptop.
My Windows 10 Phone..... completely different story. Not that the niggling little problems that I have with each individual app are any less irratating, but.....
It's a phone and I'm a bit more tolerant I guess.

I do not use Twitter even outside of Windows 10. Rumor has it that a Build 14390 is coming...??
