Deleted empty folders

I have this habit of writing down quick notes on my desktop on an empty folder kind of to use as a sticky note. I noticed all my folders got deleted somehow this morning...

Does anyone know how I can recover the folders and why they disappeared all of a sudden?

You might try System Restore.
Maybe pick a restore point from yesterday, it might do the trick.

I don't think I have system restore set up so I don't think it's an option for me. Does this mean I'm out of luck..? I don't understand how this could happen...

No luck with recuva either. It looks like there isn't a way to recover them...
