desktop problem

Since upgrading to windows10 from windows8.1 I have lost all the icons from the desktop.
Nothing seems to work with the desktop i.e I can't right click on the desktop to change it.

Just to be sure, have you tried this ........
right click at the desktop > click View > click Show desktop icons

When I right click at the desktop nothing happens so I don't get View and can't show desktop icons .I also tried dragging shortcut to desktop but this doesn't work either.
