SOLVED Desktop screen is black

Yesterday I had to ctrl-alt-delete to end task on a screen that wouldn't close. Apparently I did something else in addition because then my screen went black. I turned off the computer and this morning turned it back on. The screen came up, I entered my pw and all I get is black. Can anyone help?
