Display settings wont save

After waking from sleep mode (the pc, not me), my desktop Icons have gone all the way over to the left hand side of the screen, making some hardly visible. Also, I can't find the close buttons or minimize buttons on web pages because they have all but vanished from the screen. I have turned off "set desktop icons on the grid" (or something to that effect). Bottom line, I have to keep resetting my Advanced display settings resolution. Any suggestions?
