Does an old slow modem really limit the speed of a connection?

I have an old modem rated at N600, half on each band. I have a super fast router rated at AC3200 with 3 bands (1 at 2.4 and 2 at 5). I had an issue with my line which has now been fixed but the modem works and the router doesn't.
Is there any point worrying about getting the router working? The modem is a TP-Link TD-W8980 and the router is a Netgear R8000.
As a secondary question, anybody any idea why the router doesn't work? I have been using the pair of them for 4 or 5 years happily. The modem had to be reprogrammed, could I somehow have "switched off" the WAN port to the router or something?
Thanks in anticipation.... :)
