The equivalent would be the Tiled Start Menu
Which you can add to and group and scroll forever
There are third party commercial offerings which do something similar to what you are referencing for the Windows Desktop.

Well, I don't know if this was a feature or a bug, but I used to be able to group my desktop icons by holding down the ctrl key and using the scroll wheel (I use the zoom feature a lot). If I zoomed the icons in and then back out again, they would arrange themselves into six groups on the desktop and I would simply select "auto-arrange" to put them back into one group. I liked that a lot but all of a sudden that ability is gone. I want my groups back. Anyone familiar? I wish I'd taken a screen shot.
