I'm not so sure there is an answer anyone can give that will be definitive for all Users as each personal computer comes with its own mix of applications and hardware and drivers, all of which can run into troubles when updating an operating system.
For me I follow these steps before installing a significant Update:
I use Disk Cleanup and clear my computer of all possible options to reduce the risk of running out of space
I then create a System image of my currently working computer
I then create a new restore point before installing the update
After downloading the update and scanning it for virus I disable antivirus program
I disconnect external devices connected to my computer with the exception of mouse and keyboard
Now I run installation of the update, and as soon as it is ready restart the computer and sit there until the update has completed, just in case anything does go wrong, so I can see any alerts that may pop up.
Once the update has installed, and the computer has restarted and I am signed in, provided there are not obvious issues, I then manually create a post update installed Restore point
