I made mine the old way by using ESDtoISO, after installing on my VM, I just grabbed the install.esd from their and converted it to an ISO.
This allowed me to perform the upgrade on my physical machine by mounting the ISO.

When I was with the insider program, I did the same. Much better way to go. Once I had found, in an earlier build, that my software was compatible and working, I just kept installing barebones . I did, fot the test, in between builds, try the upgrade route however.
