My Windows 10 system has been working extremely well with few problems since installation on 1st August 2015.

However, this reproducible problem in the Mail App manifested itself yesterday (7th September). Procedure is as follows:
1. Select "New Mail" and enter recipients address and add title.
2. Start inserting message.
3. Select "Insert->Pictures" and select 2 photos simultaneously using Ctrl key.
4. Click the "Insert" button.

....System immediately "black-screens" and hard reboots, with very slow start-up and login.

This does not happen if I "Attach" the photos to the message.

Anybody else experienced this problem?

Nope.....
Just tried to reproduce your problem on my machine and inserting two pictures worked as expected.
Have you checked the Store App?
Click your account image in the top right, select downloads and updates and then the check for updates button.

Everything on my Windows 10 system is up-to-date - updates installed automatically etc...
