Hi, I wonder please if some kind soul can help me with my problem. Every time I boot my PC I get an error message, as follows:
"Error in Generaltel.dll
Missing entry RunTelemetryW"
I can just click the OK icon and the message disappears with no detrimental effect on the PC but obviously something is wrong and needs correcting.
Any assistance or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for reading,
Martin. :)

Hi,

Generaltel.dll is an application extension support file for Microsoft's telemetry software which sends reports back to Microsoft. It is normally located at C:\Windows\System32\Generaltel.dll, and is 660KB on size.

Given you are getting an error message about it your best bet would be to run a System File Check which ought to detect the issue and repair it for you [provided your router is turned on and you have internet access].

To do the scan do the following:
  • Press your windows key + S together to give focus to your search field
  • In the search field type command then in the search results, right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator
  • When the User Account Control prompts you click Yes
  • Now in the Administrator: Command Prompt type the following command:
Code:
SFC /SCANNOW

Press Enter key to execute the command. After a few minutes it will complete the scan and report on success or failure to resolve issues for you.

Hi, firstly my apologies for not responding to your reply but I did not receive any notification of any response. Anyway, funnily enough, a friend yesterday gave me exactly the same information as you but, unfortunately, it has not resolved the problem.

Therefore, I am still looking for a solution.

Apologies again for my lack of response,

Martin.

Hi, Martin!
Maybe some .NET framework is outdated or some of it features had not been fully installed. So you can download the last version from Microsoft here. Or try to download strictly this file from dll library

Hi there and thank you for your suggestions. However, when I tried to ininstall the ,NET framework it repoorted that my PC is not compatible with it, see attached picture. Then, when I tried your second option, my virus scanner reported that this was not safe, mostly down to very few very few Norton users having used it, but nonetheless made me wary. As a matter of interest, have you personally used it please?

As I can see on Microsoft installation guide you can already have this version that I linked above. The last versions are 4.7 and 4.7.1. Maybe you can try them.

I had a problem with some dll missing errors. I have updated my framework and then downloaded one of missing dll directly. It was something like a complex solution. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly on which site I have found it. And fix4dll.com was just as example because it was on first place in google search and my Avast Antivirus is keeping silence. But anyway you can try to search Generaltel.dll on any other dll libraries.

That's all I have:)) I'm not big specialist. Just said what helps me

Hi, for whatever reason, my Windows 10 will not update beyond Build 10240 which, I have found, is not supported by .NET 4.7 so I think I am inclined to just leave things as they are since, as I mentioned in my opening post, the reported error seems to be having no detrimental effect on my my PC.

Many thanks for your efforts to help, very much appreciated. :)

Well, for whatever reason, the problem would appear to have been resolved as, for the last three days, no sign of the reported error message. I have not done anything to achieve this result but nonetheless I shall mark it as "problem solved" and hope it does not reappear.

Thanks to Regedit32 and Vivideric for their assistance. :)

Martin.
