Cannot get 'double click' to work in opening Excel files

Use your mouse to select / highlight the file and then
Strike the Enter key on your keyboard.....
What happens?

This made no difference. However, I have at last fixed the problem as follows: Making sure all MS Office applications are closed, then in Control Panel >Programme & Features>from list select MS Office>at the top select Change> in new window select Quick Repair>follow the procedure. "Simples"! Thank you for your help.
