Firstly I'm not sure if I have named the place where one types what one is searching for correctly. What I now see is "FROM DOCTOPDF and underneath the bar a series of icons such as "Convert to PDF" "Convert to DOC".
I suspect that I must have downloaded something from a sneaky place without checking what came with it.
I would like to dump it and go back to what there before.

Many of those third party PDF software programs will add plug-ins / add-ons to your browsers.
Some of which will remain, even after uninstalling the program from Control Panel, Programs and Features applet.
Most top tier browser have a function where in you can manage add-ons. In IE you can simply click the gear icon in the top right and choose it from the menu.
Failing that I would suggest seeing if you can get rid of it using
JRT (Junkware Removal Tool) from here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/dl/131/
ADWcleaner from here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/dl/125/
Followed by
Malwarebytes from here http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/confirm/
In that order.

Some of these addons are REALLY resistant. There was one in Firefox where you had to go into about:config and replace strings with null strings to get rid of it

First of all go to Programs and Features in Control Panel and click on the date column so ity orders ity with the latest installed on the top. If you see anything you didn't mean to install uninstall it especially if you see the DOCTOPDF listed. Then run Anti Malwarebytes. I do this all the time to fix others PC's
