New Folder button no longer works in Windows 10

Hi, I've been using Windows 10 for about 6 months with no major problems, but suddenly I can't make any new folders in the File Explorer. Up on the Home bar, clicking the 'new folder' button just brings up the egg timer, which freezes the screen for a good few minutes. The task bar at the bottom of the screen disappears and there is no way of getting out of it. After about 5 minutes the desktop reappears. I followed someone's advice from a forum last night and downloaded something that appeared to fix it, but this morning its back to not working again.
Any advice welcomed.
