No "New" choice on desktop

When I right-click on my Win 10 Desktop I don't get a "New" choice, only "View", "Sort by" and "Refresh", so I can't establish a new shortcut there, as all the books tell me to do. New has not been there since I bought the PC with Win 10 pre-installed.

Can someone please tell me if there is a simple fix for this problem? How can I get "New" to appear in the menu?

Thanks for your quick reply, Ram, and for passing on the info from Linda. Unfortunately it didn’t work on my Windows 10 machine. I did all that was suggested and the registry fix reportedly installed OK, but no change at all. Still haven’t got my “New’ choice on the desktop. I wonder if you or another member might be able to point me in the direction of some other suggestions for fixing this annoying problem.
