I have a dual boot hp desktop with win 8.1 and win 7. After upgrading the win 7 hard drive to win 10 the Nvidia Geforce 440 graphics card cant be found, If I run the pc on win 8.1 the Nvidia graphics card works fine. The device manager in win 10 shows the display adapter is Microsoft basic display adapter. I tried to update the NVidia driver to version 358.50 but it won't install, reporting no NVidia card installed. I'm assuming the card is good because it runs ok on win 8.1. The only difference is the operating system. Is there a reason win 10 won't recognize the graphics card?

And you are installing drivers that were downloaded from nVidia? If not try them. For the moment Windows 10 drivers are not the same as Windows 7 and 8 drivers. There could be a driver conflict causing issues, a clean driver install might be advisable.

Yes driver was from NVIDIA -

Version 358.50 - WHQL
Release Date Wed Oct 07, 2015
Operating System Windows 10 32-bit
Language English (US)

This driver works on the win 8.1 drive but I can not install it on the win 10 drive. the NVIDIA card is not recognized by win 10 and the driver install is halted.

Open Internet Explorer
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
Go here https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=Nvidia Geforce 440
If you click the date column to sort, you should see a couple drivers that may work
10.18.13.5407
Usually the large in size will be for 64 bit and the smaller will generally be for 32 bit.
Please make sure you download and install the appropriate driver for your specific system architecture.

Same chipset as my 460. Fully supported as far as I know.
Yes they are both listed in the support list I quoted above. The 400 series is the oldest nVidia card that is fully supported in Windows 10 with new drivers.

There is an older driver available for older cards
