I did not ask for windows ten, and having got the damn thing I find that the screen is stretched laterally. Nowhere can I EASILY find how to correct this. If microsoft insists on dumping their product on its users the least they can do is make it easier to use. We are not all computer whizzkids out here I installed 10 myself some time ago and the next thing was that my laptop hard drive crashed. That cost me a new hard drive. Now 10 arrives unasked and the icons, images everything is laterally distorted. To say that I am annoyed would be to put it very mildly. Sort it out.
Even posting a simple comment here is the same as to travel from new york from london but having to go via moscow, new delhi and peking. It stinks

Understood.
You will likely need a driver for your Video Card.
Try either, rebooting the machine to see if that fixes the issue, or.....
Open settings -> update and security and run Windows update manually to see if that installs a driver for your GPU.

You might also right click on the Desktop and see if you have options for setting the resolution. Possibly it isn't using the correct one for your system.

By laterally stretched I mean that the usual proportions of images and icons have gone to blazes. IOW a circle becomes an oval, faces become wider, people become shorter and fatter. My point is that this happened at a most inconvenient time. Now I have to mess around correcting something that should be automatically done during installation and, not being a computer whizzkid, I will probably have to pay good money which as a pensioner I cannot afford, to get my IT service people to correct it for me. Definitely no gold stars to Microsoft on this one.

It is normally automatic.
But I suspect it is using what we call a "generic" driver.

Try this:
Right click the start icon and select the device manager.
Scroll down to "Display Adaptors" Right click the display driver which shows there, and, in the options which appear, select
"Update driver software"
Click "Search automatically for updated driver software"
The process will take a while. If it is successful, it will download and install the latest drivers for you graphics. It may require (you will be informed) a restart. Don't worry if it seems to be taking a long time. I have no idea of your computer specs but, if an older model, could take ten minutes or so.

This should have been done automatically, immediately the installation was completed, but may have glitched in your case.

Thanks very much, your advice is no doubt good. I have, however, already taken my computer to an IT service centre - which is going to cost me money. I am seriously on the verge of getting rid of Windows 10 and reverting to 7 which I had before all this nonsense began. I am also beginning to listen to friends who are Apple fans - and I never ever thought this would happen. But push a person too far and there is nothing to stop us voting with our feet. Microsoft's tactic of downloading 10 to an unattended computer really smacks of a form of pirate behaviour. Again - no gold stars.

No offense intended, but if you upgrade to a new OS and don't have some tech knowledge, then any issue are going to cost you money. I had a Windows 7 upgrade that went horribly wrong. Without tech knowledge, it certainly would have cost money to clean it up. Sorry for your issues, but it was an extremely easy fix, even without much knowledge.

No intention to divert the thread, but I am still pondering how this upgrade gets imposed automatically. There has to be a trigger, somewhere, and only in certain computer configurations, to cause it.
I have an old, but eligible laptop sitting by my TV. I only use it for streaming TV from the web. It has had the offer to upgrade, for many months. I have not chosen to accept, and have not "hacked" the laptop in any way, but still the offer sits there.

I've heard of it happening, but have yet to actually see it happen in the real world. I have a few PC's still running Windows 7 no problem. And one I sign up for the upgrade, but decided against it, as I still need a Windows 7 machine to to tech support.

I am now a big believer in the "Wee Folk...", you know - like the little man in the fridge who turns the light on and off. My IT guru called me this morning to say that he had left my laptop switched on last night, and on coming to work this morning found that the problem had corrected itself. That boggles my poor old brain even further... Thanks all for your comments and guidance - it all helps.

Still puzzling over the unwanted upgrades, without permission.. I have googled high and low, but, currently, could only find media comments, all repetitive and identical, on the subject.
This is the best I could eventually come up with, take it or leave it??

"Microsoft also states that reports that Windows 10 being forced on users are “not accurate” and suggests that users who seeing Windows 10 installed unexpectedly might have pre-selected to upgrade to the new operating system.A Microsoft spokesperson said in a Q&A: “We have updated the upgrade experience for some of our customers, who had previously reserved their upgrade, to schedule a time for their upgrade to take place.”

Users may have also have unwittingly clicked or tapped on the ‘accept’ or ‘OK’ button, which user interface elements such as Windows Access Control and the modern trend of extensive permissions and password requests bombarding users with pop-ups demanding action, has trained users to do."

Fair comment, but, one of my sons is a senior IT manager in one of our large hospitals.
Whilst he has a great deal of control over individual machines, certainly as regards updates/upgrades, several of the staff, including doctors, have been subjected to this upgrade. Unfortunately, and this is a very valid point, right or wrong, they are running specialised Dbases which Windows 10 is unable to accommodate.,

Rolled back my display driver to resolve the issue.

Right click Windows icon at bottom left of main screen.
click settings.
click system display notifications power.
click display.
click display adapter properties.
click properties.
click driver.
click roll back driver.
