System Error in Mail

Wprking in Windows 10, I have two e-mail accounts and I cannot get access to mail. Every time I try on either account I get a message -
"System Error - can't get mail"

Any thoughts?

Press the Windows and "i" keys simultaneously, click "Privacy", scroll down to "Email" in the left window and make sure that "Allow apps to access your email" is on. You may have to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

Thanks for your input. The app setting was off but turning it on didn't fix the problem. I restarted with high hopes and I still have the same error. If you think of anything else please let me know.
