That leaves a couple of other options then; at least a couple I can think are worth a shot anyway. Other's in the forum community may have some other ideas.
Option 1
Press Windows key and S key to give focus to Search box
In the Search box type Disk Cleanup then press Enter key
A small window will open - select the Drive windows is installed on
After a short while Windows will calculate what can be cleaned and size of space you could save
Then you will see the following window.
Once you check the Thumbnails click OK
Then you will see a confirmation window - click Delete files
When done, shut down computer and restart.
Check now whether icons now show. If they do not show now, then go to option 2
Option 2
Download a third party tool that adds to the Windows Shell to provide more icon choices.
Simply, download, install and run program once. Note: Towards end of install there may be an option to activate program as well as run it. Check both the run and activate boxes if they appear. Don't bother with the third option - read me now.
