After the Win 10 anniversary update my browser (firefox) at the moment times out when trying to access websites. Sometimes I can find the by using the try again button. I can't even get though to major sites like Facebook without pressing the try again button. I've tried using other browsers E.G. Google, Edge and IE with same result. I have two iphones an ipad and a desktop PC running Win 7 64bit. All these connect and the browsers run properly. I have two Win 10 laptops, both of which exhibit the problem. I've also tried using Ethernet cables instead of wireless. This shows fractional improvement. My internet speed is not brilliant, I get about 6 meg on a good day

Hi Keith, welcome to the forums. I wonder if this problem is related to your connection, rather than your PC.

How do you connect to the internet (i.e. is it an ADSL connection? Which modem do you use?).

I would be interested to see what the error is in your browser - does it timeout or it a DNS error?

Do you have any anti-virus software installed on the computers? Could you try pausing it temporarily and see if browsing is better (stick to sites you trust to be safe when doing this test!).

Hi Ian thanks for getting in touch. The modem is made by Technicolor and is supplied by my provider Plusnet.
the message I get is as follows:

The connection has timed out
The server at www.plus.net is taking too long to respond.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

TRY AGAIN

I have Kaspersky Internet security fitted as my anti virus and firewall. I've gone through the process disabling the antivirus and firewall and the modem firewall with no good result.

As I've previously said I only have this issue on my Windows10 machines and then only after the anniversary update was downloaded. I've got to admit that I look forward to every Win 10 update with trepidation.

It is quite puzzling that this only happens on the two Windows 10 PCs and not the mobile devices, as that would suggest that there is something specific about your PCs causing this problem.

Next time this happens, could you please try loading a command prompt window (right click on the start button and select command prompt) and then run "tracert plus.net" and post a screenshot of the results here please.

Normally that sort of error is either a server/ISP problem or perhaps a firewall/AV operating incorrectly. As other devices seem to work ok, that makes the former of those unlikely.

There have been a few problematic Windows updates recently, which could have caused this problem - however the solution to that one may be to wait it out and see what happens in a week or two :(.

Thanks for the advice. Just a couple of other things that maybe of note. the connection timeout message shows the website i want to go to I.E where it said www.plusnet if I was trying to get to facebook it would say www.facebook. of the two windows 10 laptops. One is a Dell which was upgraded from win 7 64bit the other one another Dell was bought with Windows 10 already installed. I did have an Lenovo laptop that I upgraded from from widows 7 64bit to windows 10. this had the same issue. I hope you are right about a solution maybe forthcoming, because I the moment i wake every morning bitterly regretting ever going over to windows 10 from 7.

There were a lot of problems caused by a recent Windows 10 update, but your problems started before the 9th Dec, so we can rule that out. However, as it only effects your W10 PCs I would suggest checking to make sure that you've got all updates installed via Start > Settings > Update and Security > Check for updates. Perhaps there has been a fix for this issue that hasn't yet been downloaded.

I'm really puzzled with this one, due to the timing and the fact that you get the same problem over wired/wireless and that it's not related to AV software.

Your tracert results are a little puzzling too. Are you familiar with event viewer? If so, can you check the logs to see if there are any errors or warnings relating to DNS/Network/Ethernet adapters please?

If anyone else has any suggestions, I'd be grateful for input :).

Do you have Adblock installed. If so, check that the sites you want to visit are not blocked.

I've had a look at the event viewer. I'm no expert, but found no critical errors. There are a lot of DistributedCOM errors event IDs 10010 and 10015. There were 40 and 41 incidents respectively in the last 7 days. I've also removed ad block with no good result. I hope this helps. have a good Christmas.

Merry Christmas :).

Could you please post the details for those DistributedCOM errors? There should be some text available to copy/paste under the "general" tab. It may not have anything to do with the problem, but I'm out of ideas, so it's worth a try.

I've got one last idea, but it's a bit of a long shot. I did some reading up on those errors and someone else tracked down the problem to the Intel Management Engine (some software you may have installed if you've got an Intel Chipset).

Can you please try running the driver update app on the Intel Downlods page please, and see if that comes up with any driver updates?:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/

Or, if you know your motherboard model (or NUC model), then you can find the drivers manually that way.

Thanks Ian, I'll give that a try. I'm also going to take my laptop over to my brothers. His internet runs at 60 meg as opposed to my 6 meg on a good day. Depending on the result I might be having a chat with my service provider.

Ian, I think I may solved the issue. I took the computer to my brothers and it worked properly. He's got 50meg internet. The lucky sod. I read that changing the IPV 4 (TCP/IPv4) DNS from automatic to 8.8.8.8 could help, especially when using Chrome. I've done this and it seems to have done the trick, fingers crossed. Thanks for your hel.
