I am trying to update to Windows 10 on a laptop currently running Windows 7. The problem is that the initial "10 second" prep has been showing "working on it" for over 4 hours. I have tried rebooting and starting the update again but it still doesn't get any further than the "working on it" screen.

Hello Brian and welcome to the forum.
The title of your thread.....
Windows 10 Update Installation won't start
AND
You say that, like it's a bad thing.... :)
Have you been reading this and other forums, as well as Microsoft's own Community Forum on Windows 10

Personally.... I think I might take that as an omen and hold off a while.:)
It's up to you of course and there are resources to force the matter.
You can download the installation media and perform the in place upgrade from that.

Please.... before you proceed, take every measure to insure that your critical data is safe. I recommend a disk image.
