My first mistake was to presume that the reservation of Windows 10 on my windows 8.1 partition some how linked my laptop to an activation key. WRONG.
Anyway I downloaded the ISO and did a clean install (format the partition and install). Left it for 6 day, still no activation. Computer was on 24 hours a day, logged in with Administrator privileges on the Internet.
So this evening I decided to re-install Windows 8.1 (My data is already backed on another external disk).
Yep, jumped trough the hoops, installed the updates to get the offer of Windows 10.
I stepped through the reserve process. Done.
My Windows 8.1 install had a valid key, so it activated as soon as it could get online.
Went through the upgrade process from Win 8.1 to Win 10. Activated!!!!
Rebooted to external USB key.
Formatted the partition and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10.
Activated Immediately!!!!!
