Where, if there is a place, can you have Windows defender run a scheduled scan ?

For some reason *Notifications* has to remind me to run a scan ... !

I will gladly have WIN 10 do that scan in the background.

System OS -- Win 10 Home

TIA

Hi Indo,

While your computer is idle, Windows Defender will automatically perform quick scans or key areas.

If you are wanting to schedule a Complete Scan instead then do the following:
  • Press Windows Key and S key together to give focus to the Search bar
  • In the Search bar type Task Scheduler then press your Enter key

This will open the following window:

  • In the left pane click the Task Scheduler Library to expand to following location:
V Task Scheduler Library
V Microsoft
V Windows
Windows Defender
  • Left click on Windows Defender to view its contents in the middle pane
Note: You may need to hover mouse cursor over vertical bar to the right of Name column, then left click, and drag to expand the Name column.

After expanding Name column

  • In the middle pane as above image, double-left click on Windows Defender Scheduled Scan
  • In the window that opens click the Triggers tab then the New button

  • Now in the New Triggers window that appears do the following steps:
  1. Click drop arrow and ensure On a schedule is selected.
  2. Select a frequency. In sample image below I chose weekly.
  3. Set the start date and start time for first scheduled scan.
  4. Select how often to recur (repeat) schedule. Also, select a day of week for scan (if you chose a weekly or monthly frequency).
  5. Check the box next to Enabled
  6. Click OK

That is it, you can now close Task Scheduler and let it do its first scheduled scan based on start date and time you chose to set. If you are using a laptop the Conditions tab can be used to set for schedule to only run if laptop is connect to AC power to help save power.
