I find now that when I rename a Word document file, the rename box has a file extension it says like .rtf etc. When I have renamed some files, I accidently renamed the whole box, so the file extension disappeared. Then when I save the new name, the icon has no W (Word) letter anymore. Then when I try to open it, it asks me what I want to use to open it. It lists about 5 programmes to use, but the only one that works is Word anyhow. I know this is caused by my own accidental renaming the whole rename box, but how can I avoid this mistake in the future? The old Windows 7 never had this new file extension. Please help. Cheers. Ken.

You can always "hide extensions of known types".
