I saw the prompt to install the update, iam cautious though. Should i go for it? Or wait a while longer...ive been waiting since they first announced it rolling out. I want to make sure its safe given its early history of messing up files etc.

Upon hearing someone running into a glitch with update, decided to hold off... Possibly rest of this year.
Those are isolated incidents which are to be expected. That said, you're running some security risks by not getting the latest update. Just back up (save) all pertinent (important) data....ie photos, music, documents and videos. Once you have that....then go ahead with the update.

Microsoft > "On May 11, 2021, the Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations editions of Windows 10 version 1909 and all editions of Windows Server, version 1909 will reach end of service,"

2004 & 20H2 caused no problems for my 2012 Dell desktop.

Exporting and importing the registry does not do anything good IMHO. If you have updated to a newer system you need to backup the files before updating, not the list of where to find them.
Backup is done using something like Acronis Tru Image, Macrium reflect or AIOMEI backupper. With these you make an image of your system and save everything in one file. I personally use True image (paid for version). So far never had an issue even with restoring it. However, it stores only your system at the time of the backup, so every change after that will be lost. That commends frequent backups (I do mine every week, but only the system, the data is on a different drive)...

I use Macrium Reflect 7 free version. Only takes 30 minutes to save an image of my 2012 Dell 20H2 desktop hard drive to My Passport Ultra (USB3). Search for > Macrium Reflect tutorials <
