Can I use my Windows 8 key to activate Windows 10 without reinstalling it?

My motherboard was replaced, and now I can't activate Windows 10. Will using the Windows 8 key affect my Windows 10 installation or settings? When I entered the activation code, it prompted for a restart, which concerns me. Also, this is my Mother's account as mine was locked due to suspicious activity, so I can't authenticate that way.

The replacing of the motherboard makes it a new computer as far as activation goes and using a Win8.1 or earlier key supposedly has been stopped by Microsoft. When Win 10 was installed it should have a Digital License and may have to call Microsoft to work that out.
