I upgraded to win 10 from 8.1 a couple weeks ago. A couple minor issues but they were cure easily. Its been working fine, until yesterday. No apparent issues, then it froze completely and I tried a hard restart and no win 10 boot. Several attempts and it gave me a "critical process died" msg and shut down. Finally managed safe mode and that crashed after a few minutes also. Tried a restore from boot and it didnt work. Stuck at 1%. Back to safe mode and discovered win 10 dosent turn on system restore by default. So, no restoring to win 8.1 . I am a working chef and have a career project coming up as a private chef. Everything is on this laptop. Its a Lenovo G480 notebook and its been carefully maintained. I am in a complete panic and have less than a week to prepare. I understand this is an issue with win 10. Its only been maybe 2 weeks since I upgraded it. I am really desperate here and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

IF you did not backup your critical data and or make a disk image prior to upgrading to Windows 10, I would think that your first order of business would be to secure that data now.
Since your machine is unbootable, and assuming that your hard disk has not physically failed
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo...eating-and-Hard-Disk-Bad-Sectors/td-p/3301619

You could remove the physical drive from the laptop and attach it to a second running machine to retrieve the data.
There's a video here
and about 4 minutes into it, he gets to the hard drive component.
IF you do not feel you have the requisite skills necessary to perform the task you may need to get a tech pro involved in the data recovery and any subsequent repair to the operating system that might be required.

You may also find it necessary to contact Lenovo and obtain the Recovery Media (DVD) https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/supportphonelist
IF you did not create your recovery disks in advance.

Yeah, I brought home the ext hd to do all that and never got the chance to do it. I found the file that 8.1 is saved in, but i cant access the update and recovery in safe mode. also, when it is booting, it carshes before i get to the option for rollback. extremely frustrating as there is nothing wrong with this computer. perfect working condition until the upgrade.

You might try creating the Windows 10 installation media and booting from that and attempting a "Go Back" to your previous version of Windows from that interface.
I would still want backups of my critical data before going forward with anything involving that hard drive, just to be on the safe side.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techbench
Choose Windows 10, the first item in the first drop down (not single language at the bottom) * see note at bottom.
Next choose your language and your bit version (32 or 64 bit to match your system architecture or in the case of an upgrade, to match your currently installed version of Windows).
That will provide an ISO that will boot, upgrade, repair (or clean install) either or both Windows 10 Pro and Home.
Once you have downloaded the ISO you can use ImgBurn to burn it to a DVD http://imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
OR
Rufus to burn it to a USB ThumbDrive http://rufus.akeo.ie/
When you've managed to boot from the installation media you need to click the Repair Your PC link on the second page after the Choose a Language and Keyboard layout page.
That should get you to the Advanced Troubleshooting options, where you should have an option to "Go Back to ........."

*NOTE: In some cases, we've learned that some people have the "Single Language" version installed. In which case you would need that download. It's important that you match the ISO version that you download with your installation.
