[Trouble]

I can see a spike in the manufacturing and sales of faraday cages on the horizon.

This change would mean that, by default, the devices end up listening to and recording everything you say in their presence.

Faraday cages won't work on sound waves but there is a solution: do not buy alexa. Why would anyone put a spy in his home??
Of course, in a time where everybody publishes his farts on social media, privacy is no longer a valued item but at least on social media the user is in control (more or less)...

I was thinking that it might inhibit the device from being able to either operate as a recorder or at least stop it from uploading everything it heard to the mothership or both.

If it is a wifi device, which it is, then enclosing it in a Faraday cage will stop the wifi so most of the functionality will be gone. If is on ethernet then it won't make any difference.
