Faraday cages won't work on sound waves but there is a solution: do not buy alexa. Why would anyone put a spy in his home??
Of course, in a time where everybody publishes his farts on social media, privacy is no longer a valued item but at least on social media the user is in control (more or less)...

I was thinking that it might inhibit the device from being able to either operate as a recorder or at least stop it from uploading everything it heard to the mothership or both.

If it is a wifi device, which it is, then enclosing it in a Faraday cage will stop the wifi so most of the functionality will be gone. If is on ethernet then it won't make any difference.
