So my questions are:

Old farts like me who have updated/upgraded MS stuff many.many times always use a wired connection while doing that. Judging by some of the questions and problems in the networking sub forum here it is still good advice with W10.

I would expect upgrading from an ISO should contimue but maybe there is a phase where it feels it needs internet access to look for a driver or possibly to activate. I don't know.

How exactly were you "upgrading from an ISO"?
Through the normal upgrade channels, once you have fixed the router problem, your upgrade will contiue. It may appear to be starting from the beginning again, but will, in a short time catch up with anything already downloaded and the process will finish in good time.
