Robots in this instance are "crawlers" or other automated tools that are loading pages on the site. For example, Google uses "Googlebot" to scan the site for content so that it can be indexed in the search engine:

The forum software knows that something is viewing a page, so it counts as a visitor to the site - but it differentiates automated crawlers (at least ones it knows about) so that the visitor count is a true reflection of humans and automated viewers.
