SOLVED defender auto scan

My defender auto scan seems to affect the performance of my desktop greatly. I have it set to off hours, but pc is usually off. Scan starts sometimes right in the middle of something. My question is, Can I turn auto scan off and manually scan now and again ? If I can, please advise instructions as how. Thanks for any advice...Jim...Maybe a bad idea...
