I used to have a passcode to get into Windows 8.1, now I have to put in a password instead. How do I get back to putting in a passcode instead of a password so that my husband can use my laptop? Is a passcode not as safe as a password?

Not sure if you are referring to a "PIN" or not but Windows 10 includes the same functionality in that respect as did Windows 8.1
Just go to
Settings -> Accounts -> Sign-in options
You should be able to configure a PIN and a Picture password as well if you'd like.

I'm not familiar with the term "passcode".
Did that involve some sort of third party software?

To Trouble,
You are an angel. I did mean PIN, not passcode. Sorry about that. It was not third party software. My mistake. I did what you instructed and this is exactly what I wanted to do. Thanks with all my heart.
