What could cause an application to disappear from screen

Hello

Sometimes, not often thankfully, when I am either using Word or an email client and typing a message, the screen will disappear and I am left with the 'workbench screen' and if I move my corded Microsoft mouse even just slightly the screen is restored and I can continue typing.

I have researched the internet and couldn't find an explanation to this annoying problem and would be grateful for an explanation and fix.
