Connecting Devicess to Network

While visiting relatives out of state, I was unable to connect to their network with my laptop, but my tablet was able to connect. How can I be assured that my laptop will connect in the future?

I've found it difficult to impossible to set the Wi-Fi up for "foreign" Routers without actually being on-site.

Did you have a static IP on your home network?? something like this: 192.168.1.2 ?
make sure you have set the settings to " Automatic (DHCP) "
