Some of the icons on my desktop have a green box with a check mark in it over a good part of the icon. What does this indicate and why is it there ?

Hi and Welcome to the Forum.

The green check mark indicates the file has been synced to your Microsoft OneDrive account.

On the bottom right side of screen (System Tray) you ought to see a Cloud icon. If you click that you can choose to open it to see what files are being stored on the cloud.

You can also change what is saved to the cloud by left-clicking the cloud icon, then clicking the More icon in the window that opens.

Regards,

Green checkmarks on desktop icons point out that the file is backed up to the OneDrive cloud successfully.
Green checkmarks on desktop icons don’t represent any errors. Moreover, these are OneDrive signs to indicate that the icon’s files are fully syncing with OneDrive. It means that checkmarks may not harm your file.

Microsoft's OneDrive has successfully backed up your work to the cloud, This is what is indicated by the green checkmark on your desktop icon.

This icon depicts a green box with a thick, white check mark inside it facing left. This emoji could mean a successfully completed task, an “all is good” symbol, a positive reinforcement, or an indication of passing a test, getting a good mark on a school paper, or receiving high accolades on a job-related project.
