How much space is on your hard drive? Windows needs several Gb of disk extra while doing an update.
Does your machine only have the 4GB original memory? 64 bit versions of Windows need to have 8GB nowadays ( I may be wrong on this)

I have 120GB available space on the drive but only 4GB memory. I just checked my laptop and it has 6GB so lack of memory might be the reason

4GB RAM is not a reason not to be able to update. My laptop has only 4GB RAM and is currently running 20H2.
You may have to go to 1909 first before updating to 20H2 respective 2004 first. Usually Windows Update shows you if your PC is ready to be updated.

On November 13, 2018, we re-released the Windows 10 October Update (version 1809), Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server, version 1809. We encourage you to wait until the feature update is offered to your device automatically. A summary of the current status of the October Update can be found below.

Note for Commercial Customers: November 13 marks the revised start of the servicing timeline for the Semi-Annual Channel (“Targeted”) release for Windows 10, version 1809, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server, version 1809. Beginning with this release, all future feature updates of Windows 10 Enterprise and Education editions that release around September will have a 30-month servicing timeline.

Current status as of November 23, 2020
As of November 10, 2020, the Home, Pro, Pro for Workstations, and IoT Core editions of Windows 10, version 1809 and all editions of Windows Server, version 1809 have reached end of service. Devices running these editions will no longer receive monthly security and quality updates containing protections from the latest security threats. We recommend that you update these devices to the latest version of Windows 10 immediately. For more information on end of service dates for currently supported versions of Windows 10, see the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy search tool.

or do as suggested in the previous post. That would be the easiest way...

As well as the suggestions so far, update failures can relate to driver updates needed. Go to the HP site Snd download and install all the drivers offered, and try again

I had to do updates on a computer for a lady a couple weeks ago and it turned out to actually be a Version Upgrade from 1803. I ended up getting Version 1909 followed by 2004. At each step there was an error message about it missing some important updates missing but once on Version 2004 everything was working good, even some printer issues that occurred with a couple of Build updates were cleared up.
