microphone not detected on Windows 10

I'm using a desktop computer running Windows 10, and I've relied on a USB webcam with a built-in microphone for a few years now.
However some apps can't seem to detect the microphone. Skype and Zoom are working fine, but Messenger isn't. Windows itself fails to recognize the microphone, stating that it's not connected. Even after attempting to update the driver for the device it insists that I already have the latest one installed. Any suggestions on that?
