"Search" possible or not?

Hi everyone!

I am new in this forum and also new in Windows 10, so you must excuse perhaps my ignorance...
After installing and using Windows 10 on my Laptop (Sony Vaio 32 bit) for several days, having upgraded from Windows 7, I'm happy with the new features, except for what I just noticed now : - Clicking on the "search" icon on the bottom toolbar (the small magnifier) nothing happens!
So, if I wish to write a word and search for the respective location (e.g. "Recovery Drive") where can I write it? (This was an easy task in Windows 7, but now I don't see how and where to write any wording and search for it.
I am attaching herewith a picture which I think would clarify my problem.
Can anyone help?

Open the start menu. You can type your search into it without any text field.

Another option is enabling Cortana who can search for you.

Thank you but unfortunately that does not work: - Opening my Windows 10 start menu and typing shows nothing at all! Regarding Cortana, it is not yet working in my case (in Portugal); any other hints, please?
