Spider solitaire mystery

I have played thousands of spider solitaire games, using the brainium version. I play a game within the game which means I try to get to the point where there are less than 10 cards on the board so I can't fill all the spaces. This has never happened. Every time I think I am there I count the cards on the board and there are 16 left. I mean EVERY time. Not 17 not 15, but 16. what's going on? Thanks
