Having completely uninstalled and then attempted to reinstall SQL Server Express 2017 I have run across an intractable problem.
The SQL browser (needed to enable software connection to the server) installs but cannot run because it says that the required Local User Group already exists but then cannot not use it, according to the Install Log.
Further investigation shows the group sqlserver2005sqlbrowseruser$desktop-dm5mrt3 seems to exist but it doesn't show in the list of groups in Users and Groups Manager, which reports on loading that the group doesn't exist so it must be looking for it.
Attempted to delete it from the command line, C:\>net localgroup sqlserver2005sqlbrowseruser$desktop-dm5mrt3 /delete produces the error that the group does not exist while attempting C:\>net localgroup sqlserver2005sqlbrowseruser$desktop-dm5mrt3 /add reports that it already exists.
I'm now stuck and have completely run out of ideas to exorcise this ghost group.
Anyone help please?
Thanks.
Phil.
