TP-Link amplified WIFI antenna cannot be recognized

I've been using this TP-Link amplified antenna for a couple of years now and in the last moth or so when the computer is booted, I get a window saying the USB device cannot be recognized. I have to unplug and re-plug the device several times the computer will "see it" and work normally.
No idea why it is doing this.
