Activation Fails With Valid Win7 Reg. Key

I was running genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, tried to upgrade to Windows 10. Dismal failure, system crashed. Had to do a clean re-install of Windows 7, downloaded the correct Windows 10 version, installed it, all went well. I was not invited to insert my Windows 7 registration key. Just got an automatic message that Windows 10 is not activated, so I went into the activation routine, and surprise! surprise!, my valid Windows 7 registration key is not accepted, and I'm invited to buy a new one. What happened here? And how do I activate Windows 10?
