You don't mention, how you are trying to back up your Quicken files..... does the application have its' own backup routine like QuickBooks, or are you dragging and dropping them from some place to another.??
Are you getting an error message when you attempt to back up the files?? Something like access denied??

Sorry for not being more specific..........I am trying to back up to my D:/ drive. I have a disk that I have previously backed up to successfully and it is not full so I inserted it the same way as usual but I am thinking this may have something to do with my updating to windows 10. I get a message that says "unable to access D drive, file not backed up." There doesn't seem to be any reason for this to happen.

Is your D:\ drive an optical drive? Are you attempting to backup to a CD or DVD?
Again..... how are you attempting to backup or are you simply dragging the files to a writeable or rewriteable optical disc?
Are you using the backup facility from within the application?
Which version of Quicken are you using?
Have you tried backing up to an alternate location, perhaps to a folder on another disk or partition?
IF this is an optical disk, have you tried a new one?

My drive accepts both CD and DVD but this particular is a DVD and I have used it before without trouble. I use back-up facility within Quicken. My version is Quicken 2006 Basic. Not an optical disk. Have not tried using another folder. I don't see how this would help since I want an outside source in case of computer failure.

It was simply a suggestion to determine if the
I use back-up facility within Quicken
was the problem or if the problem was with the optical drive or disk.
Then you could simply drag the local folder that contained the backup onto the DVD and see if it would write it to the disk.

That's a pretty old version of Quicken and checking through some resources on the web I find
https://qlc.intuit.com/announcements/1195595
So it seems that they are not or at least have not yet check for any compatibility issues with 2006 and Win 10 yet.
Additionally I find some mention of perhaps needing to uninstall and reinstall 2006 to get it to work properly
