It all depends on what your specific needs are. In my case, I was concerned because there were numerous power outages and brown-outs for a time in my area, and I wanted a UPS to prevent my system from taking those hits, and to rely on the UPS to do a smooth shutdown of the PC. Most home-style units won't hold a long reserve, unless you want to lay out a lot of money for them. You generally won't be connecting more than your PC, modem and maybe an external drive to the UPS. The more you connect, the more juice you draw from the battery.
