win10pro-22H2, new install.
my brother hl-5040 printer wont work in win10.
this is a multiboot computer & it works fine in win7.
it connects via USB
it appears in 2 places, settings-devices & scanners, where it says driver is unavailable.
ive tried adding new printer from there, it finds it but after a minute it sez unable to load driver.
printer also appears in control panel-devices & printers where properties sez everything is fine.
ive tried power on/off & unplug/replug USB cable. I get the usual usb msg scanning devices then device is ready.
so usb seems happy but settings sez driver unavailable & printer dont show up when I try & print a doc.
Again, it works fine if i boot to win7.

thanks for the response, thats interesting but almost 3 years old.
I'm running v22H2, OS build 19045.2604, new install & my problems a little more severe in that win refuses to install the driver supposedly contained in win updates.
i tried it again yesterday (settings-install new printer) & got 'cant install hl-5040 kemel mode print driver, contact manufacturer'.
i find it strange that the driver is present in updates but win cant install it.
on the other hand USB thinks everything os fine. when i disconnect/reconnect, it sez setting up device, then, device is ready!

Got it!
Found solution searching for latest error msg.
Another user had a 5040 & said it wasn't even listed in the install new printer-updates list so he tried installing the driver for the 5140 & it worked.
I tried the same & it's working fine.
Strange, I wouldn't have thought of it in a million years since the 5040 did appear in my list.

Microsoft is a crazy company! I have the same problem. I used 5140 driver and my 5040 worked but there is some problems. For example if my printer is in stand by mode, an error is occurred even if I turn my printer to working mode. The only solution is I should turn off and then turn on my printer for printing!

The strange is I was using the same printer under windows 10 without any problem previously and now after reinstalling windows, this problem was occurred!
