cannot open anything - buttons don't work.

Computer turns on and gets to the home page. Then clicking any button doesn't produce any response at all. The only way to shut off is by pressing the power button. What is wrong and how can I get back to working? My laptop is an HP with an a10 processor purchased about six months ago and used very sparingly. Any help would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

try Alt-F4 should lead you to a dialog asking if you want to shutdown.

The mouse pointer moves but clicking on anything doesn't do anything.
