Display issue after Win10 upgrade

Long story short, I'm upgrading a relatives Dell Inspiron N5110 from 7 to 10. The install one fine, except after the Windows icon and the spinning circle disappear upon startup, the screen goes blank. I connect an external monitor, I can see the desktop. I've tried many different things but still the laptop display won't return to normal. Any ideas?
