Trying to upgrade to win 10 on my wife's laptop. After some time the screen had a message that it was restoring back to previous version of windows. Which is win 7. In the update history box it shows win 10 as pending with error code 80242014. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

My first inclination is to suggest that you....
Put down the mouse and step away from the computer.
Once sufficiently clear of all furniture, do a little happy dance that your "wife's laptop" survived and you're not now in the dog house for blowing up her computer as a result of attempting an upgrade to Windows 10 (regardless of your good intentions). AND remember that no good deed goes unpunished.

Regarding the specific error, it looks like some problem exists either with the media you are using or perhaps with some peripherals that are plugged into the laptop.
NOTE: Some older laptops are just not well suited for upgrading to Windows 10, so....
Please check the manufacturer's website and see if they have any specific information with respect to the upgrade and that particular laptop. If they have any Windows 10 hardware drivers might be a good indicator.
Additionally, please....

Then if you are determined to continue in spite of the possibility of falling from her good graces....
I'd suggest acquiring the installation media in the form of an ISO.
The installation media can be obtained through either of these two resources.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techbench
OR
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Once you have the ISO, you can use ImgBurn to burn it to a DVD or Rufus to burn it to a USB ThumbDrive, either of which you can use to run "setup.exe" from within Windows 7 to perform the in-place upgrade.

I'll try the ISO method. Thank you for your help. My wife uses my laptop from time to time and she liked win 10. The bugs have been worked out and it's running fine. That's why I don't understand why her laptop won't upgrade, it's the same year and model as mine, both bought on the same day and at the same store.

She may be running a third party security suite or have a peripheral attached that the update doesn't like.

I went to Gateways site and the model we both have says it won't support Win 10. Funny, mine is running fine with Win 10.
